Ursula von der Leyen suggests that Europe supply itself with more American LNG to reduce dependence on Russia and ease tensions with Washington.

This is a proposal that should make Donald Trump jubilant and enrage Vladimir Putin. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has proposed that the United States supply more liquefied natural gas (LNG) to the European Union, in a bid to reduce dependence on Russian gas. “We still get a lot of LNG from Russia so why not replace it with American LNG which is cheaper for us and lowers our energy prices?” she asked herself.

This initiative was discussed during a telephone exchange with Donald Trump, who threatened to tax European imports to correct the American trade deficit. Von der Leyen stressed the importance of negotiating and identifying common interests, such as increased imports of American LNG, deemed less costly and beneficial in lowering energy prices in Europe.

Strengthen economic relations between the two Western blocs

Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the EU has already significantly increased its imports of American LNG, but remains partially tied to Moscow in energy terms. This proposal is part of a strategy aimed at strengthening transatlantic cooperation while responding to American criticism of European trade surpluses.

For his part, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz called for a compromise with Washington. He recalled that the prosperity of the United States also depends on bilateral trade, thus laying the foundations for a common policy which could ease tensions and stimulate economic relations between the two Western blocs.
