TThree people lost their lives during the night from Thursday to Friday, the Brussels firefighters announced in a press release. “Around 1:10 a.m., the Brussels firefighters, medical emergency services 112 and the Midi zone police intervened for a fire in a three-story building with a business on the ground floor, in Anderlecht, rue de Fiennes. On arrival on site, a large amount of smoke was noted. The fire was raging in the stairwell. Two occupants were evacuated. Unfortunately, three mortal remains were discovered: two victims on the landing of 1is floor and a victim at the entrance to an apartment on 3e floor. »
One person was also injured and taken to hospital.
The firefighters specify that part of the stairwell collapsed and that the origin of the disaster remains to be determined.
“Following the fire a gas leak occurred in the building. Sibelga came to the site to cut off the gas supply by opening the sidewalk in front of the damaged building. The electricity was also cut off,” the statement continued.
Which concludes with advice: “If possible, avoid evacuating your home via a stairwell filled with smoke. Stay at home, close the door (to prevent smoke from entering the home) and report your presence to the emergency services, via the window (possibly with the light on your smartphone) or by calling 112. Follow the instructions given by the rescuers. »
