A Bayern Munich spectator died during the Champions League match between the German club and Benfica Lisbon on Wednesday.
Bayern Munich is in mourning. The spectator treated Wednesday evening in a medical emergency in the stands of the Allianz Arena in Munich during Bayern-Benfica (1-0), died on the way to the hospital, the Munich club announced in a press release, during the night from Wednesday to Thursday.
From the start of the match on the 4th day of the Champions League, an emergency medical intervention took place in the south-eastern sector of the Allianz Arena for almost half an hour. The rescuers resuscitated the spectator several times before transporting him, under life support, to hospital, the club explained to the German press agency SID, a subsidiary of AFP.
No celebration
“About an hour after the final whistle, the ‘Rekordmeister’ received the sad news of the fan’s death on the way to the hospital. Bayern is in mourning and stands alongside the family,” the Bavarian club wrote on its website overnight.
Bayern supporters from the Südkurve, where the club’s ultras meet, quickly stopped their chants throughout the match and removed the flags from their stands, the match taking place in cathedral silence, only the chants of the Benfica supporters resounding in the stadium of 75,000 spectators.
After the match, Bayern captain Manuel Neuer and coach Vincent Kompany indicated that there had been no celebration of success in the locker room.
