Russia urges Ukraine's allies to start negotiations to prevent 'destruction of the Ukrainian people'

Russia on Thursday urged Ukraine's Western allies to open negotiations with Moscow or risk “destruction of the Ukrainian people.” a few hours after a new “massive” drone attack in kyiv.

More than two and a half years after Russia's invasion of Ukraine began, Moscow is in a strong position on the eastern front, where its army is advancing ever faster against fewer and fewer Ukrainian troops. well equipped.

The head of the Russian Security Council and former Minister of Defense, Sergey Shoigu, urged Western powers, in a threatening tone, to open negotiations favorable to Moscow.

“The situation in the theater of hostilities does not favor the kyiv regime. The West had a choice: continue to finance [l’Ukraine] and destroy the Ukrainian people or admit the existing reality and start negotiations,” he said.

These statements come the day after the election of Donald Trump as president of the United States, Ukraine's main political and military ally.

During his election campaign, Trump, who boasted that he could end the war in a day, repeatedly denounced the scale of aid provided to kyiv.

The ball is now in the Americans' court, Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov said on Thursday.

“We will see if there are any proposals” from the new administration, he declared.

Shoigu's comments also come after another night of aerial bombardments across the country, a new “massive” attack by Russian drones, which left two people injured, and the capture claimed by Moscow of a new village in the east of Ukraine.

Russia has systematically targeted the Ukrainian capital with drone and missile strikes since the first day of its invasion launched in February 2022.
