Parcel fires linked to Russia worry Europe

Key information

  • European authorities are investigating package fires targeting courier companies in Poland, Germany and the United Kingdom.
  • Electric massage devices containing a magnesium-based substance are suspected of being the source of these incendiary devices.
  • Western governments have responded vigorously to these incidents, with some countries implementing heightened security measures and taking retaliatory measures against Russia.

European authorities are investigating a series of package fires targeting courier companies in Poland, Germany and the United Kingdom. Polish prosecutors believe the incidents were orchestrated by the GRU, Russia's military intelligence agency, to sabotage flights to the United States and Canada.

Western security officials have expressed concern that the fires, which occurred in July, were part of a broader campaign involving hidden explosives and dangerous materials concealed in packages sent by courier companies. These packages spontaneously ignited, causing significant damage and sounding the alarm.

Investigation and response

The suspected origin of the incendiary devices lies in electric massage devices containing a magnesium-based substance. Magnesium-based fires are notoriously difficult to extinguish, particularly on airplanes, making them a potential threat to air travel. Prosecutors suggest the group's goal was to test the logistics of sending such packages to the United States and Canada, using the incidents as trials for future attacks.

Lithuanian authorities confirmed their involvement in the investigation, saying arrests had been made in the country. A preliminary investigation is underway, in which law enforcement agencies from several countries are participating.

Western governments react

The fires sparked strong reactions from Western governments. In Germany, a device suspected of being Russian sabotage was discovered at the DHL logistics platform in Leipzig. The head of Germany's domestic intelligence agency stressed the seriousness of the situation, saying it was only by sheer luck that the device did not burst into flames in mid-flight.

Ken McCallum, head of MI5, has accused Russian secret agents of carrying out arson, sabotage and other dangerous actions after the UK's support for Ukraine in Russia's war. The Kremlin has vehemently denied the allegations.

Consequences and countermeasures

These incidents highlight growing concern over potential Russian interference and aggression against countries that support Ukraine. DHL has implemented enhanced security measures across Europe to protect its network and customer shipments. The Polish government has taken retaliatory measures, closing a Russian consulate and threatening further action if the attacks continue.
