“Never could an American presidential election have so many consequences on France, on Europe and on the world” if Donald Trump were to win it, former French head of state François Hollande warned Monday on BFMTV.
“With Trump, it is not simply a repetition of what we experienced in the first term: there would be an immediate increase in customs duties, therefore protectionism like never before experienced, including the Europeans – and not just the Chinese – would be the victims,” said the former socialist president.
According to him, if Donald Trump wins the American presidential election, the voting of which takes place on Tuesday, “there will be an increase in unemployment, lower growth and even perhaps higher inflation, because there will be an American budget deficit very important and undoubtedly a monetary policy which will accompany it, because we must finance the American deficit”.
Furthermore, “the war in Ukraine will undoubtedly stop if Trump wins, but for the benefit of Putin: Putin will have won,” pointed out the man who once again became a PS deputy for Corrèze in July. “And if Putin wins, he will not stop, he will go a little further: Georgia, it is being done; Moldova, we'll see. But Armenia is already under its control, Azerbaijan under its tutelage,” he continued.
François Hollande again warned of a clash between the United States and China in the event of the victory of the Republican candidate, which “will perhaps occur in an essentially commercial and economic area, but perhaps also in an area military”.
“Moreover, (Donald Trump) still behaves strangely: the link he established with the president of North Korea will surely lead to a relaxation of what Atlantic solidarity is,” observed the ex-French president.
