“We would have been taken down”, a fight broke out after Papin’s reserve match in Corsica

At the center of an internal conflict, Jean-Pierre Papin experienced a stormy end to the match on the pitch of the Corsican club Corte, Saturday, in National 3. As reported by La Provence, a member of the staff even received a blow in the face.

A decidedly stormy period for Jean-Pierre Papin. In open conflict with Ali Zarrak, head of the “Pro 2” group which liaises with the first team, the OM reserve coach experienced a chaotic end to the match on the pitch of the Corsican club Corte on Saturday in National 3.

As reported by La Provence, Jean-Pierre Papin's men were beaten 2-0 at the end of a meeting “which went well despite catastrophic refereeing”. But everything went wrong after the final whistle. When leaving the field, the tone rose between Robinio Vaz, young Marseille striker (17 years old), and other Corsican players. The Marseillais then allegedly kicked a ball towards a fence where Corte supporters were gathered, which caused the situation to escalate.

“As if the gates had opened and people had entered”

Around forty people – but not Corsican players – then entered the tunnel, “as if the gates had opened and people had entered”, according to a Marseille source cited by La Provence. Several members of Jean-Pierre Papin's staff stood in the way to protect Robinio Vaz. One of them was punched.

Without the intervention of these staff members, “we would have been taken down,” assures a member of the Olympian delegation. No player was ultimately hit. Once calm returned, Robinio Vaz and a Corte player, Dume Menozzi, were sent off by the referee.

In the middle of last week, “JPP” returned to reserve training after five days off. As part of the conflict between him and Ali Zarrak, the 1991 Ballon d'Or was received by Pablo Longoria on Friday, as was the head of the “Pro 2” group. The president of OM could resolve this dispute this Monday.
