US, Russia 'on brink of direct military conflict,' Russian foreign minister says

In an interview with Turkish newspaper *Hürriyet*, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the United States and Russia were “on the brink of direct military conflict.”

He attributes this situation to a rise in “Russophobia” under the current US presidency, without indicating a preference for the next US president. Lavrov stressed that even under the Trump administration, anti-Russian sanctions were plentiful, and believes that no matter who wins the election, the United States' position toward Russia would likely remain unchanged.

Russia has recently intensified its disinformation campaign, notably targeting Vice President Kamala Harris, according to the Microsoft group. This situation revives fears of foreign interference in the American electoral process, while Russian-American tensions continue in the context of the conflict in Ukraine.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is adopting a pragmatic stance, saying his relations with Washington will depend on post-election US actions, while acknowledging Republican candidate Donald Trump's statements on peace in Ukraine. Relations between Putin and Trump have long been characterized by ambiguity, with each displaying a certain cordiality while maintaining substantive differences.
