These two days when the most people die in

The reasons for birthday syndrome

Several hypotheses are put forward to explain this increase in mortality on the birthday. Among these, INSEE mentions the excess alcoholfatigue, as well as road and cardiovascular accidents. Furthermore, this symbolic day could be a source of solitude and of sadness for some people, exacerbating the risks of suicide as observed in Japan, where the suicide rate rises by 50% on the day of the birthday.

Mortality increases in winter, especially on January 3

The INSEE study also shows that the January 3 is the deadliest day in with an average of 1,900 deaths between 2004 and 2023. This winter peak is linked to the consequences of end of year celebrations and the resumption of surgical operations. Winter periods are, overall, the most conducive to mortality due to the circulation of seasonal viruses like the flu. On the other hand, the August 15 is the least deadly day, with approximately 1,410 deathsparticularly due to the reduction in hospital interventions.

A seasonal and weekly impact on mortality

L’winter concentrates increased mortality for the oldest, while 18-29 ans suffer more deaths during the summer, particularly on the roads. The study also reveals a slight variation in days of the weekthe mardi recording a peak in deaths, while the Sunday is the least deadly day, possibly due to the reduction in hospital activity and family visits.
