This is the day when the most people die in (and it's coming soon)

This Wednesday, October 30, INSEE unveiled data revealing the day of the year when the mortality rate is the highest.

During this All Saints' Day period, INSEE (the national statistics institute) carried out a study on mortality in during the last 20 yearsincluding the day when the most people die. This study also reveals the periods of the year when people die the least.

More deaths in winter

Every year, from November to April, the number of daily deaths exceeds the average. Mortality increases particularly in the middle of winter, with an increase of 14% in January and 12% in Februarymainly due to increased spread of seasonal viruses such as the flu. This trend mainly concerns those over 30, accentuated with advancing age.

On the contrary, deaths among young people (18-29 years old) are observed during the summer period. They are more numerous among deaths occurring on public roads or in public spaces, which occur more frequently during sunny days, especially on the roads. And conversely, more resistant to winter epidemics.

The deadliest day of the year and…

Although the number of deaths is relatively low during the summer, it peaks just after the holiday season, with a peak on January 3. Every year, between 2004 and 2023, there is an average of 1,900 deaths recorded on this specific day. “January 3 is a winter day, which follows the end of year holidays”analyzes INSEE. Conversely, the day when there are the fewest deaths is August 15with an average of 1410 deaths every year.

INSEE pushed the study even further with the day of the week that records the peak of deaths. This is Tuesday (1.2%). While mortality is lower falls on a Sunday (-2.7%). On the contrary, mortality among young people peaks on weekends.

Another interesting fact: there is a higher risk of dying on your birthday. The study suggests an increase of 6%. All age groups are impacted, with an increase for 18-39 year olds (+21%). Older people are also affected: “The average number of deaths on 100th birthday is 29% higher than the average number of daily deaths for people of the same age”notes INSEE.
