an update based on M4, M4 Pro and M4 Max chips

Apple delivers its new MacBook Pro 14 and 16 inches. If they use the design of their predecessors, they are equipped with new chips Apple Silicon M4, M4 Pro et M4 Max. They also have (optional) an anti-reflective panel. They will be available from 1899 € (Puce M4), by 2399 € (M4 Pro chip) or 3799 € (M4 Max chip).

Design and connectivity: nothing changes (or almost)

Never two without three! After unveiling its new iMac M4 and Mac mini with a much more compact design, the Californian firm continues its Mac Week and launches the new generation of MacBook Pro.

These models are in line with their predecessors and the chassis stay strictly identical. Those who were waiting for a slimmed down version will have to be patient. The model 14 inches measures 31.26 x 22.12 x 1.55 cm for 1,55 kg. The model 16 inches reaches 35.57 x 24.81 x 1.68 cm for 2,14 kg (M4 Pro) and 2,15 kg (M4 Max).

We find the screen Liquid Retina XDRalways accompanied by the notch. The biggest novelty concerns the nanotextured finish of the screen, designed for reduce reflections of the slab. A billed option 170 €regardless of the model chosen (14 or 16 inches).

The maximum brightness goes up to 1000 nits (with a peak of 1600 nits for HDR content). The front camera switches to 12 Mpxwith support for the function Center Stage 1080p.

The connectivity is (almost) identical to previous models. The two 14 and 16 inch models benefit from 3 ports Thunderboltof a port HDMI and a card reader SDXC – which photographers will always appreciate. However, we note the arrival of Thunderbolt 5 – but only for versions M4 Pro et M4 Max.

MacBook Pros equipped with a chip M4 or M4 Pro can manage, in addition to the internal screen, up to 2 external 6K 60 Hz displays (Thunderbolt), or 1 6K 60 Hz screen (Thunderbolt) and 1 4K 144 Hz screen (HDMI). For their part, the smart MacBook Pros M4 Max can handle up to 3 external 6K 60 Hz displays (Thunderbolt) and 1 screen 4K 144 Hz (HDMI).

Apple Silicon M4, M4 Pro or M4 Max: for all tastes (and all budgets)

The new MacBook Pros benefit from the new Apple Silicon M4 chip – just like the new iMac and Mac mini.

The version 14 inches can be equipped with chips M4, M4 Pro or M4 Max. Positive point: even the cheapest configurations ship 16 Go of unified memory. For its part, the 16 inch version opts directly for the chips M4 Pro and M4 Max.

Concretely, the M4 puck is based on a 10-core CPU (4 performance cores and 6 high efficiency cores), a 10-core GPU and a motor 16-core Neural Engine. The result is performance increases of 80% (application part) and 120% (graphics part) compared to old M1 chips. On the 14-inch MacBook Pro, unified memory increases to a maximum of 32 GB.

The puce M4 Profor its part, is based on a 12-core CPUand 16-core GPU and a 16-core Neural Engine. For increased performance, a version equipped with a 14-core CPU and a 20-core GPU is also offered – as on the new Mac mini. On the 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pros, the chip is coupled with up to 48 GB of unified memory.

Highly anticipated, the M4 Max chip opt for one 14-core CPUand 32-core CPU and a 16-core Neural Engine. For even more breathtaking performance, a version equipped with a 16-core CPU and a 40-core GPU is also proposed. The chip can manage up to 128 GB of unified memory (with a bandwidth of 546 GB/s, sorry).

Not without a certain pride, Apple boasts processing in Topaz Video AI until 30.8 times faster than with the 16-inch MacBook Pro with Intel Core i9 processor. On the other hand, compared to a 16-inch MacBook Pro M1 Max, the performance gain is more modest (1.6x).

In all cases, the Mac mini M4s run under macOS Sequoia 15.1and are compatible with Apple Intelligence AI.

Our first review of the M4 MacBook Pros

In small steps, Apple is modernizing its MacBook Pro 14 and 16 inches. Of course, the design is unchanged, but the new anti-reflective nanotextured coating seems promising. Too bad it is only offered as an option (and at €170). Beyond the new M4 chips, we especially appreciate the move to 16 GB of memory unifiedincluding on the least expensive version of the 14-inch model.

In any case, these new Macs should largely appeal to professionals of all kindswhatever their field of activity and their budget.
