Football/Ligue 1: The Montpellier coach leaves after the debacle against OM

“I terminated the functions of Michel Der Zakarian this evening. He is no longer the first team coach. Given the performance and the attitudes this evening, I felt obliged to intervene,” declared Laurent Nicollin during a brief press conference. After eight days, Montpellier is 18th and last in L1 with only four points and a goal difference of -18.

“It’s really not light hearted. I appreciate it, but what matters is the club, not the people. For the next coach, I have nothing planned, nothing anticipated,” added Nicollin.

“For the moment, I am ashamed of having taken 5-0 at home against OM. I am ashamed for myself, for my club and for the supporters. I told the players that they had blown away their coach and that they had better be better against Toulouse next week,” said the Montpellier president.

“Something had to be done. These are not easy times, especially when you like people. But that’s the life of Football. When there is no result, it is easier to change the coach than 25 players,” concluded Laurent Nicollin. Michel Der Zakarian was appointed coach of Montpellier in February 2023. He had already held this position between 2017 and 2021.
