Ukraine: 17 injured and electrical installations hit by Russian strikes

Nighttime Russian airstrikes on residential areas left 17 injured and deprived thousands of homes of electricity, as temperatures approached zero degrees, an official Ukrainian source said on Sunday.

For its part, the Russian Defense Ministry said it had shot down 110 Ukrainian drones overnight over several regions, including one over Moscow.

In Ukraine, 17 people, including a rescuer, were injured in an attack in the Ukrainian town of Kryvyi Rih, emergency services said.

“At night, the enemy attacked Kryvyi Rih, partially destroying an administrative building and damaging residential buildings and vehicles,” the same source said in Telegram.

Russia also attacked an energy installation in the Sumy region, in the northeast of the country, the regional electricity operator said in Telegram, which reported “more than 37,000 consumers” temporarily deprived of electricity.

Kyiv is preparing to face the harshest winter of the war, with Moscow having destroyed entire sections of its production capacity and continuing to strike energy sites.

In previous winters, millions of people were plunged into frequent power outages and were left without heat during subzero temperatures.

43 drones

In Russia, the Defense Ministry said Sunday that air defenses had intercepted 43 drones over the Kursk region, where Ukrainian troops have been carrying out a ground offensive since August to try to divert Moscow’s forces. .

Another 27 drones were shot down over the Lipetsk region, 18 over the Oryol region and one over the capital, as well as a total of 21 over the Nizhny Novgorod regions , Belgorod and Bryansk, according to the statement published in Telegram.

Russian aviation authorities also announced that they had temporarily closed Kazan airport, about 1,000 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, on Sunday morning, citing air security concerns.

The Rosaviatsia agency did not specify the reason for the suspension of flights, but such restrictions are usually imposed when Ukrainian drone attacks are reported.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is scheduled to meet the leaders of China, Brazil and Turkey in the same city later this week for the BRICS summit, the largest gathering of Moscow’s allies and partners inside the country since the invasion of Ukraine.
