Yes for resolution 1701, but without any amendments being added!

On the eve of the planned arrival in Beirut of the American envoy, Amos Hochstein, the head of the Lebanese Parliament, Nabih Berry, declared that this visit represented “the last chance for the United States to reach a diplomatic solution” in order to end the escalating conflict in Lebanon between Hezbollah and Israel.

“There is an American desire for a ceasefire in Lebanon before the American elections” (scheduled for November 5, 2024), he added.

Mr. Berry also wanted to clarify his position, saying that it is aligned with that of Hezbollah. He said he was in favor of “the full implementation of Security Council resolution 1701 (…), but without any amendment being made” (this UN resolution ended the war between Israel and Israel in 2006). Hezbollah).

“I have been mandated by Hezbollah since 2006, and it accepted the 1701,” he recalled Sunday evening, during an interview with the pan-Arab television channel Al-Arabiya.

The head of the Lebanese Parliament called on all parties to seize this moment to implement this UN resolution, as it enjoys broad consensus.

“The Lebanese consensus on Resolution 1701 is rare, and we adhere to it,” he stressed.

Furthermore, Mr. Berry revealed that he was working “on a plan to save Lebanon”. In this context, he rejected allegations that “Iran was obstructing his plan” mentioned above.

For the head of the Lebanese Parliament, the only solution in the region lies “in a Saudi-Iranian rapprochement”.

He also recognized that Mr. Mikati’s government in charge of current affairs was “facing unprecedented challenges,” ensuring that the latter “was fulfilling his duties as best as possible.”

Asked about the presidential election, Mr. Berry also recalled that “the nomination of the commander in chief of the Lebanese army, General Joseph Aoun, as candidate required a constitutional amendment, then the approval of more than 86 deputies”.
