Switzerland: tobacco tax increases, towards an increase in the price of cigarettes?

The price of certain tobacco products will soon increase in Switzerland. On Wednesday October 16, the Federal Council decided to revise tax rates upwards. An increase which will come into force on January 1, 2025. In a press release, Parliament estimates the additional revenue linked to this increase at 45 million francs.

A moderate increase for certain products

The “moderate” increase in tax scales only applies to certain tobacco products, namely cigars and cigarillos, fine-cut tobacco and water pipe tobacco, other smoking tobacco (pipe tobacco and tobacco products). tobacco intended to be heated), as well as other manufactured tobacco (snus, chewing tobacco and snuff).

From 2025, the price should increase by around 40 cents per sales packet for rolling tobacco, heating tobacco products and snus, specifies the Federal Council.

The price of traditional cigarette packs will remain unchanged. The tax scale can no longer be increased since Parliament exhausted its powers in this area in 2013.
