The state-owned company announced this Wednesday the creation of a partnership with the Eastern Energy Alliance which brings together 209 communities and territories. The objective: to produce 1000 MW of wind energy in what is called the Wocawson zone, located in the Kamouraska MRC. This is public land with an area of 700 km².

Expected to cost three billion dollars, the project is part of achieving Hydro-Québec’s objective of adding 10,000 MW of wind energy by 2035.

The announcement is the first step in a longer process which includes, in the coming months, pre-consultations with the host community. Field analyzes should provide a better understanding of the potential of the Wocawson zone.

The development of the project will be done with the Wolastoqiyik Wahsipekuk First Nation. The community “is happy to be able to contribute to Quebec’s energy transition” in what it presents as “a spirit of economic reconciliation”, indicates the Grand Chief of the latter, Jacques Tremblay, specifying that the term Wocawson means “wind” in wolastoqey.

This partnership is part of Hydro-Québec’s Wind Development Strategy, announced in May, according to which First Nations and municipal partners participate from the start in the development of projects, as partners and shareholders.
