What is Müller-Weiss syndrome, from which Rafael Nadal suffers?

DECRYPTION – The king of Roland-Garros will retire in November. A decision motivated in part by this rare and painful condition in the left foot, which also explains why the athlete was better on clay.

«I’m not hurt. I am a player who lives with an injury”recalled Rafael Nadal, after his fourteenth coronation at Roland Garros, in 2022. The famous king of clay, who is preparing to retire next November, was not speaking here of a heart injury, but of his Müller-Weiss syndrome in his left foot, from which he has suffered since 2004. A rare disease, causing severe chronic pain in the middle and back of the foot, which he had to overcome throughout his career. Two years ago, Nadal emerged victorious from a tournament during which he had multiplied infiltrations to alleviate the ills, and to live out his legend.

«I live with a ton of anti-inflammatories every day to give me a chance to train (…) If I don’t take them, I limp”confided the athlete. The decision to retire is partly motivated by the worsening of this disease, for which there is no treatment yet…
