Death of former president and international arbitrator Belaid Lacarne

Former president of the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) and Algerian refereeing icon, El Hadj Belaid Lacarne.

Belaid Lacarne is a former Algerian football referee born in Sidi Bel Abbes. He refereed a match during the 1982 World Cup. In 2002, he was appointed to the referees committee of the Confederation of African Football with a view to the CAN 2004and is currently part of the arbitration committee of the FIFA. Lacarne was also a trainer, controller, head of the national referees commission and expert FIFA.

Belaid Lacarne also trained several Algerian referees, including ex-international Djamel Haimoudi et Mohamed Benouzato name just a few. El Hadj Belaid was the only referee to have directed the Algerian Football Federation in the room as president-elect. He has just left this world at the age of 84 (he was going to celebrate his birthday on October 26). He was one of the best African whistles and much in demand by the FIFA.

The Algerian Football Federation (FAF) offered his condolences to the family of the deceased: “It is with great sadness that the President of the Algerian Football Federation, Mr. Walid SADI, learned the unfortunate news of the death of the former international referee and former president of the FAF, Belaïd LACARNE, which occurred this Tuesday, October 15 2024 at almost 84 years old. Belaïd LACARNE, an emblematic figure of Algerian arbitration, chaired the Federal Arbitration Commission for a long time and served for several years as a member of the FIFA and CAF arbitration commissions. He also officiated at the 1982 World Cup in Spain. President Walid SADI sends, on behalf of the members of the federal office, his most saddened condolences to the family of the deceased as well as to the great family of Algerian football. May Almighty God welcome the deceased into His vast paradise and may his soul rest in peace. “To God we belong and to Him we return”
