Sint-Joost: Emir Kir wins absolute majority, CD&V member Wout Van Eylen elected

A monster score for Emir Kir: with 4,176 preferential votes, the mayor of Sint-Joost-ten-Node is certain of a new mandate. With his list of mayors, he received more than half of the votes, a slight gain of 2.6 percent compared to 2018. At that time, Kir was still a member of the PS party, but he was expelled from it in 2020 after a meeting with several far-right mayors. from Turkey.

For the same reason, his own majority was split in two and former alderman Philippe Boiketé (PS) chose to form a socialist list himself. He dreamed of a coalition with Ecolo-Groen to dethrone Kir. Boiketé ultimately ends up on the opposition benches: with 19.9 percent of the votes he can count on six seats, not enough to replace Kir. Boiketé received 1,103 preferential votes, Emir Kir almost four times as many.

For comparison, six years ago Emir Kir received 3,579 votes. His popularity has only grown.

Four Dutch speakers

The third party is Sint-Joost is Ecolo-Groen with 15.5 percent of the votes, a loss of almost ten percent compared to six years ago. Dutch-speaking municipal councilor Frédéric Roekens (Green) retains his place in the municipal council, but Thomas Van Doesselaere (Green) will not be re-elected.

Yet the number of Dutch speakers in the municipal council is growing, because Wout Van Eylen has been elected to CD&V. He was in seventh place on the joint list with Les Engagés and MR and received 151 votes, more than party leader Saïd Benhammou (Les Engagés). With 148 votes, he is the only other elected member of the group. Les Engagés-CD&V-MR-VLD achieved a total of 9 percent.

It is the first time that CD&V has a seat in the Tennode municipal council. Until now, Van Eylen was a federal cabinet employee and wants to tackle migration policy and security in the Brabant district through local channels, he previously told BRUZZ. Furthermore, Marie-José Byl (666 votes) and Stéphanie Ngongo (541 votes) were elected as Dutch speakers from Kir’s mayoral list. The municipal council now has four Dutch speakers, one more than during the past legislature.

After all, Team Fouad Ahidar still gets five percent of the votes: just too little for a place in the municipal council. The Dutch-speaking party leader Ibrahim Dankus received 159 preferential votes.

In total, just under eight in ten residents who were eligible to vote showed up, despite the obligation to do so.
