UNITED STATES – Donald Trump victim of another assassination attempt? A heavily armed man was arrested on Saturday October 12 near the meeting of the Republican candidate for the American presidential election in Coachella, California.
The announcement comes after two assassination attempts against the former Republican president in recent months, and at a time when he is pleading for more resources to be devoted to his security. Here is what we know while two versions contradict each other.
• How did the events take place?
It was at a checkpoint near the entrance to Donald Trump’s rally around 5 p.m. that the man in an SUV was arrested before the rally began. The Republican candidate for the November 5 presidential election was not yet there.
The suspect was “in possession of a rifle, a loaded pistol, and a high-capacity magazine” in his car, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. During a press conference, Sheriff Chad Bianco clarified that he had been arrested “ with multiple passports under different names, an unregistered vehicle with a false license plate, and loaded firearms”.
This false license plate would be the work of the group of sovereign citizens, a global movement with conspiratorial overtones which does not recognize the State and does not “do not contract” according to their mantra. According to Chad Bianco, the suspect belongs to this group.
• What reason?
“There is absolutely no way that any of us knew what was going through his head.”recognized Chad Bianco. But “ If you ask me right now, my agents probably prevented the third assassination attempt.” against Donald Trump, said this elected official, known for his support for the ex-president and who also spoke at the meeting on Saturday evening.
• Who is the suspect?
The man arrested was identified as Vem Miller, a 49-year-old Las Vegas resident. He was released on $5,000 bail that same evening. He is due to appear in local court on January 2 for the offenses of “possession of a loaded weapon” et “possession of high capacity magazine”.
Questioned by the media Press EnterpriseVem Miller for his part claimed that the weapons were in his trunk and that they had bought them for his own safety. A graduate of the prestigious Los Angeles university UCLA, the 49-year-old ran for local elections in 2022. He said he was pro-Trump.
