Tragic death of UNC player Tylee Craft at age 23 after battle with rare lung cancer

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The sports community is mourning the loss of North Carolina football player Tylee Craft, who died early Saturday morning after courageously battling a rare lung cancer for more than two years, it was confirmed head coach Mack Brown.

Brown shared the heartbreaking news during his postgame press conference following the Tar Heels’ recent loss to Georgia Tech. Tylee, just 23 years old, has exemplified perseverance and positivity in his fight against a disease he was first diagnosed with in March 2022.

“This young man fought valiantly throughout his two and a half years with us,” Brown said. “The medical team told us he exceeded all expectations. He did this with an unwavering spirit, a smile that lit up the room, and a commitment to his teammates, never missing a meeting or practice, while mentoring younger players. »

In a poignant tribute, UNC dedicated its annual cancer awareness game to Tylee, with his friends and family proudly wearing clothing adorned with Craft’s name and jersey number during a special on-field ceremony.

Receiver JJ Jones honored Tylee by wearing his jersey, with the number 13, during the game against the Yellow Jackets. Brown recounted a touching moment when he felt the weight of the situation, sharing an emotional hug with Craft’s mother just after the first quarter. “I believe the family feels the love surrounding them, and that love will continue to flow in the days to come,” Brown said, adding, “We must stay strong for each other and pray for strength as We are navigating through this loss for our team and our community. It is my responsibility to stand up and support my players on and off the field during this difficult time. »

In addition to the football team’s announcement of Craft’s passing on social media, a moving tribute video was shared in his memory. The UNC men’s basketball team also participated in the tribute to Craft, wearing t-shirts with his name and number during their intrasquad game. A moment of silence was observed before the match in recognition of Tylee’s impact on the community.

A native of Sumter, South Carolina, Craft made his mark on the field, appearing in seven games during his true freshman season in 2020, and appearing in four games the following year before his diagnosis. Throughout his illness, he remained a dear member of the program.

“Tylee was a beacon of light to so many, and his influence will resonate with us forever,” the UNC football program said. “He was one of a kind, and although he may no longer be here physically, his spirit, his smile and his undying positivity will always guide us. »
