Lorena Wiebes wins the 5th stage, Lotte Kopecky falls in the final

The Dutch Lorena Wiebes (SD Worx-Protime) won the 5th stage of the Simac Ladies Tour, a women’s WorldTour cycling race, on Saturday. The European champion won in a sprint after 140 km around Doetinchem, in the Netherlands. Her teammate Lotte Kopecky fell in the final. The German Franziska Koch (dsm-firmenich PostNL) retained the overall lead.

Kopecky found herself on the ground 2 km from the finish, while the mass sprint was being prepared. The world champion arrived at the finish line with her jersey torn at the shoulder, where scratches were visible.

Wiebes won in the sprint ahead of the Italian Elisa Balsamo (Lidl-Trek) and her compatriot Nienke Veenhoven (Visma-Lease a Bike). Wiebes, 25, scored the 93rd success of his career, the 22nd of the season. She won for the third time in this Simac Ladies Tour after winning the 2nd and 3rd stages.

The 6th and final stage will take place on Sunday over 145.8 km in Arnhem. Kopecky is the defending champion in this stage race created in 1998 under the name Holland Ladies Tour.
