The 2024 Nobel Peace Prize awarded to the Japanese organization Nihon Hidankyo

This Friday, October 11, the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to the Japanese organization Nihon Hidankyo, in recognition of its efforts for a nuclear-free world. This movement brings together survivors of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, also called Hibakusha. The Norwegian Nobel Committee praised their commitment to raising awareness about the dangers of nuclear weapons, through their testimonies showing the horror of such weapons.

Among the 286 candidates nominated for this prestigious honor were figures such as former US President Donald Trump, billionaire Elon Musk, Pope Francis, former NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, the British naturalist David Attenborough, as well as the NGO Reporters Without Borders.

The winner is chosen by a committee of five members, appointed by the Norwegian Parliament. The Nobel Peace Prize is the only one to be awarded in Oslo, while the other Nobel Prizes are awarded in Stockholm. Last year, Iranian activist Narges Mohammadi, imprisoned in her country, was rewarded for her fight against the compulsory wearing of the veil for women and her opposition to the death penalty.
