But this year, Paris shares the bakery with Strasbourg” explains HelloFresh. On average, a baguette costs €1.19 in the Alsatian capital.

Up to €1.30 in the hyper-center of Strasbourg

After verification, the bakeries in the city center indeed reach this price, or even exceed it. The baguette is sometimes even €1.30 in the hyper-center, near Place Kléber. At the foot of the cathedral, in the “Au pain de mon grandfather” bakery, a baguette costs €1.20. The price of quality, according to its manager, Rachida Lakrambi: “Work, rent, staff, it all has a cost. And then everything is homemade at home with good products and good raw materials.“.

It’s not that expensive when you think about it” confirms José Arroyo, president of the federation of bakers and pastry chefs of Bas-Rhin. “We must not forget that in the city center of Strasbourg, rents are very high. They sometimes exceed €10,000. And then we are lucky to have many quality small craftsmen. Their fixed costs are higher than for the large chains. There is therefore necessarily an impact on the price of the baguette“.

“In Strasbourg, everything is expensive”

And what do the people of Strasbourg think about it? “I’m not very surprised” explains Laure, a customer who has just bought a baguette. “In Strasbourg, everything is very expensive“. “I’m all for defending artisans, so I guess this price is justified. Everyone suffers from inflation, I can understand” adds a young girl, near a bakery. In front of her, a retiree adds : “I wouldn’t change bakeries. It doesn’t matter the price. It’s opposite my house and I like the salespeople. They’re friendly“.
