The Constitutional Council invalidates the candidacy of

According to information reported by Walfadjri, the Constitutional Council delivered its verdict this Tuesday, ruling on the ineligibility of Barthélémy Dias for the next legislative elections.

The decision of the 7 wise men follows an appeal filed by the And Liggey Sunu Reew coalition who contested the candidacy of Dias, head of the proportional list of Samm Sa Kaadu.

The reason given for this invalidation is the final conviction of Barthélémy Dias in the Ndiaga Diouf affair. This appeal highlighted the incompatibility of his conviction with the eligibility criteria in force. The mayor of Dakar had in fact been found guilty in this case which dates back to 2011, concerning the death of Ndiaga Diouf. After a series of legal proceedings, his conviction was definitively confirmed, thus sealing his ineligibility.

The decision of the Constitutional Council represents a major setback for the Samm Sa Kaadu coalition, which is deprived of an influential leader as the legislative elections approach. Barthélémy Dias, a leading political figure in Dakar, enjoyed strong popular support, particularly after his success in the municipal elections. Its invalidation raises questions about the impact of this decision on the political balance in the capital.

The verdict confirms the strict application of electoral laws in Senegal, and could cause tremors in the national political landscape, as crucial elections approach.
