Jeanneke-Pis will be the ambassador of Plan International during the Day of the Girl

“Committed, daring and spontaneous, Jeanneke-Pis cares little for privileges and breaks with harmful traditions. In the Impasse de la Fidélité, near the Grand Place, she attracts several hundred visitors every day,” underlines Plan International. The NGO will thus take advantage of the statue’s notoriety to promote the rights of girls.

They “disproportionately face violence and harassment. […] Worldwide, 119 million girls are out of school. Every year, 12 million of them are married before the age of eighteen,” laments Isabelle Verhaegen, national director of Plan International Belgium. “In conflict situations, girls are impacted even more severely. They have less access to basic services than boys, feel less safe and suffer more from insomnia and stress.

The theme given to the day by the United Nations this year will be “Girls’ vision for the future”. “Girls represent the future,” notes Plan International on this subject. “Our programs have enabled 74 million girls to learn language, mathematics and science, but also their rights and sexual and reproductive health. Education makes them stronger in all areas.”

On October 11, the NGO will remind everyone that girls around the world have the right to make their own choices and make their voices heard.
