Such a meteorological event can be surprising. However, Météo-France indicates that it “is not unprecedented for tropical cyclonic systems to be taken into the general circulation and arrive as a disturbance affecting western Europe”.
The meteorological institute cites in particular the example of Hurricane Ophelia, in 2017, which had lost its tropical characteristics off the coast of Spain and continued its course over Ireland with still violent gusts of wind.
“In its wake, it had carried further north, both the sand dust from the Sahara and the ash dust from the fires in Portugal, giving orange colors to the sky, particularly in Brittany,” illustrates Météo-France.
