Body of occupant of vehicle submerged in Yukon River found

More than three weeks after a fatal road accident in the Yukon River, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) say they have found the body of its occupant who had been reported missing.

On September 16, around 7 a.m., two men from Phoenix, Arizona, riding in their pickup truck towing a trailer, ended up in the Yukon River after missing the entrance to the Lewes River Bridge.

The driver managed to escape from the vehicle and reach the shore where he received medical treatment. The passenger, however, Knate Ostenso, had still not been found, despite numerous searches.

The Coroner’s Office has ordered an autopsy of the occupant of the vehicle and intends to conduct an investigation, we read in the press release.

The GRC of Whitehorse would like to thank the members of the Yukon Search and Rescue Association and the Whitehorse Fire Department personnel for the support provided during an intense search period.

The family did not immediately react to the news, but had, throughout recent weeks, expressed hope that the father would be found alive.

He is a survivor, a good swimmer, who frequents the backcountry. We keep hopeindicated his daughter-in-law, Gabrielle Mihajlovich, in an interview with CBC.
