A lot of rain is expected in over the next few hours, due to Storm Kirk. Météo France has placed twenty-five departments on alert this Wednesday, October 9, 2024. is one of them due to rain and flooding.

The alert is given from 9 a.m. and will last 24 hours.

Orange rain warning in Sarthe: 80 mm of precipitation expected

“A significant rainy spell is expected for Wednesday. Accumulated precipitation could reach 80 mm on average. This heavy rainfall is likely to affect human activities and cause significant flooding in the areas usually affected, across all hydrological basins,” warns the Prefecture of Sarthe in a press release, this Tuesday, October 8.

Significant accumulations of precipitation over short periods of time can, locally, cause unusual flooding of streams and ditches. Under these conditions, risks of overflowing sewerage networks are possible. Vigilance therefore remains required until the end of the episode.

Accumulations which will probably make road traffic conditions difficult, particularly on the secondary network. The Prefecture also notes that disruptions may affect rail transport, outside the main line network. “Power outages may also occur.”

The Prefecture takes the opportunity to make recommendations on the behaviors to adopt in the face of future weather phenomena:

  • Avoid any unnecessary travel, and if necessary, adapt your speed and be extremely careful on the roads
  • Stay away from watercourses and scrupulously respect the instructions and prohibitions put in place by the municipalities
  • Never go, on foot or by car, on a submerged path or near a watercourse. In just 30cm of water, a vehicle, even a 4×4 can be swept away
  • Avoid going down into exposed basements, garages or cellars
  • Avoid walks in the forest
