Indonesia: American tourist devoured by shark

Colleen Monfore’s paradise vacation took a dramatic turn on September 26 off the island of Pulau Reong in the Moluccas. The 68-year-old American was in the middle of a diving session with six friends when she found herself in difficulty in strong currents. The guide who accompanied the group failed to bring her back to the boat, and the unfortunate woman disappeared into the vastness of the ocean.

After eight days of fruitless searching, emergency services gave up all hope of finding the missing woman, originally from South Dakota. But on Sunday, a fisherman from neighboring East Timor discovered human remains in the belly of a shark. The animal “was captured but it was not in normal condition. I thought he had swallowed plastic or a fishing net. We opened it to understand what the problem was and inside there were the remains of a woman,” explains the man, quoted by the “Mirror”.

The body has not yet been identified, but it was wearing a black wetsuit and matched Colleen’s description. East Timorese authorities are in contact with the Indonesian coast guard. They also appealed for information on anyone with missing friends or relatives. Shark attacks are extremely rare in Indonesia: according to the International Shark Attack File, only eleven such incidents have been reported since 1749.
