Club is stuck at a draw against Union

Club Brugge drew 1-1 against Union at home. Blauw-Zwart were in charge and had the better chances, but fell behind shortly after the break after an Ivanovic goal. Ten minutes before the end, Brandon Mechele headed in the deserved equalizer.

Nicky Hayen made three changes to the team that defeated Sturm Graz on Wednesday. Zaid Romero replaced Joel Ordóñez at the back, while Hugo Vetlesen re-entered the team in midfield. Ardon Jashari retained his starting place and played slightly lower this time, in place of the suspended Onyedika. Up front, Michał Skóraś was favored over Andreas Skov Olsen. Gustaf Nilsson was still injured, so Ferran Jutglà kept his starting place.

Both Club and Union had a European midweek match in their legs, but both teams started the match with full dedication. High pressure and a lot of intensity, but that did not result in many clear-cut opportunities. The only danger in the initial phase came after mistakes at the back. First Vanaken was unable to take advantage of a miss by Burgess, while on the other side Mignolet was able to stop Fuseini after a slip by Romero.

Both teams kept each other in balance, but shortly before the half hour, Club had the chance to score the opening goal. Jashari was able to continue on the left and brought the ball low in front of goal, but Skóraś kicked the ball wide from a few meters in front of goal. At the other end, Sadiki had two chances, but he could not embarrass Mignolet. Shortly before half-time, Tzolis was tackled in the penalty area, but ref Lambrechts and VAR De Cremer saw no problem. Immediately afterwards, Vanaken took a cross from Tzolis in one go, but Moris kept the clean sheet on the board.

After the break, Club immediately started looking for the opening goal. After a few minutes, the people of Bruges came close three times. First, Jutglà’s attempt was saved just before the goal line, then MacAllister was able to clear a shot from Tzolis and finally, Moris just pushed a De Cuyper deviation away from under the crossbar. Instead of 1-0, however, against the flow of play it became 0-1: Franjo Ivanovic cleverly took the ball and kicked the ball in from the corner.

Blauw-Zwart immediately tried to react, but Jutglà’s header flew straight at Moris and Romero’s shot went wide. Nicky Hayen then threw Skov Olsen and Talbi into the fight. Skov Olsen immediately seemed to have an impact when his cross was touched by Burgess’s hand on the edge of the box, but ref Lambrechts allowed play to continue. Moments later, the Dane was able to push through on the right, but his cross blew past the far post. At the start of the final quarter, Tzolis deflected a De Cuyper cross wide of the target.

Ten minutes before the end it worked: Jashari painted a corner on the head of Brandon Mechele and he headed the 1-1 past Moris. Club continued to push hard, but did so taking risks. For example, Mignolet first had to save Ivanovic’s shot, while the Limburger had to do everything he could to deflect Terho’s hard shot from his goal deep into injury time. The score remained 1-1, meaning the people of Bruges had to settle for a point.
