Nine films to see in cinemas in October 2024, with the return of the Joker and Venom

The month of October 2024 promises to be particularly busy and French cinemas should welcome quite a few very promising feature films. To help you see the story more clearly, here is a small selection made by us.

Summary

  • Joker: Folie à Deux
  • The Apprentice
  • Lee Miller
  • My Hero Academia: You’re Next
  • Love phew
  • Smile 2
  • Mr Aznavour
  • The Killer
  • Venom : The Last Dance

Joker: Folie à Deux

After the great slap in the face that was the first film, Todd Phillips returns with a proper sequel although a little special: “Joker Folie à Deux” actually has the particularity of flirting with the musical, while remaining the dramatic and ultra-noir thriller that was already its predecessor. In the role of the Joker, we obviously find Joaquin Phoenix (who still won the Oscar for Best Actor for his interpretation of the character) while the arrival of Harley Queen will be ensured by Lady Gaga. Quite a crazy casting for a highly anticipated, very intriguing film which also has the heavy responsibility of creating a surprise again. Not easy.

  • Going to the cinema: October 2, 2024
  • Director : Todd Phillips
  • With : Joaquin Phoenix, Lady Gaga, Brendan Gleeson

The Apprentice

We best know him for his role as the Winter Soldier, but Sebastian Stan clearly moves up a gear in The Apprentice where he disguises himself to become a certain Donald Trump: the film actually tells the story of the rise of the famous American businessman, resulting notably a pact with lawyer and political matchmaker Roy Cohn (played by Jeremy Strong). This biography promises a deep dive into the violent and ruthless industry of business and economics, being directed by Ali Abbasi. For the record, the latter has already worked on season 1 of The Last of Us and is also the author of the excellent Les Nuits de Mashad in 2022. Basically, it’s a good one and we therefore have to keep an eye on The Apprentice.

  • Going to the cinema: October 9, 2024
  • Director : Ali Abbasi
  • With : Sebastian Stan, Jeremy Strong, Maria Bakalova

Lee Miller

The Second World War has always fascinated cinema, although it manages to find certain original angles of an event that we know only too well. In the feature film directed by Ellen Kuras (Ozark, Umbrella Academy), the famous Kate Winslet slips into the shoes of Lee Miller, a former model for Vogue who decides to become a war photographer, one of the first women moreover . Obviously, his experience and his photos were quickly noticed, as were his determination and his courage once immersed in the horror of the conflict: it is also a true story, which will be carried by other figures known as Andy Samberg, Alexander Skarsgård and Marion Cotillard.

  • Going to the cinema: October 9, 2024
  • Director : Ellen Kuras
  • With : Kate Winslet, Andy Samberg, Alexander Skarsgård

My Hero Academia: You’re Next

Anime fans rejoice: My Hero Academia returns to the big screen very soon through You’re Next, a film whose story takes place just after the Paranormal Liberation War. Here, Izuku Midoriya and his classmates unite to help the heroes hunt the bad guys, a rather complicated mission when they find themselves facing a giant fortress and especially Dark Might, a mysterious man who claims to be the new symbol of peace . IF you like explosive action, the epic side and Japanese pop culture, you’ve come to the right place.

  • Going to the cinema: October 9, 2024
  • Director : Tensai Okamura
  • With : Daiki Yamashita, Nobuhiko Okamoto, Yûki Kaji

Love phew

In the 80s, Clotaire and Jackie meet again after years. When they were younger, they had a strong and unique love story, but the two people chose different paths: one notably became a criminal, having received a long prison sentence. When he gets out, he discovers that Jackie has married, but their story is not completely over… and above all, it is difficult for him to escape the vicious circle of violence. L’amour ouf promises to be one of the big punchy films of this year 2024, pleasing in creating both blood and tears with a remarkable cast: Adèle Exarchopoulos, François Civil, Alain Chabat, Benoît Poelvoorde, Vincent Lacoste, Jean-Pascal Zadi, Raphaël Quenard, Élodie Bouchez… And everything is orchestrated by Gille Lelouche himself.

  • Going to the cinema: October 16, 2024
  • Director : Gilles Lellouche
  • With : Adèle Exarchopoulos, François Civil, Mallory Wanecque

Smile 2

Seemingly nothing, the first had its small success and as is often customary with horror films, a sequel is already preparing to be released: Smile 2 will therefore take up this same particularly disturbing concept, that of a possession forcing the victims to smile, but also to act in a rather… virulent way, let’s say. A blockbuster which will take Naomi Scott as its muse with the return of Parker Finn behind the camera, the author of the first opus: to see if the whole thing will not fall into the easy way, but fans of thrills should probably find what they are looking for .

  • Going to the cinema: October 16, 2024
  • Director : Parker Finn
  • With : Naomi Scott, Rosemarie DeWitt, Lukas Gage

Mr Aznavour

This ambitious biopic, directed by Mehdi Idir (La Vie Scolaire, Patients) and Grand Corps Malade, is a very big project, focusing on the exceptional journey of one of the greatest French-speaking singers in history: Mr. Charles Aznavour. And to interpret this unique personality, Tahar Rahim was chosen, surprisingly resembling the author of some of the greatest musical classics of the language of Molière. Suffice to say that yes, we base a lot of history on this eagerly awaited biography.

  • Going to the cinema: October 23, 2024
  • Director : Mehdi Idir, Large Sick Body
  • With : Tahar Rahim, Bastien Bouillon, Marie-Julie Baup

The Killer

Not to be confused with The Killer by David Fincher recently released on Netflix, this other The Killer signed by the great John Woo offers an ultra-stylized adventure, full of action and convoluted choreography where a hitman accepts a new contract after A mission went wrong. Note that if we find a large cast with Sam Worthington and Nathalie Emmanuel, it will be supported by Omar Sy in one of the main roles, while we will also see Eric Cantona. So far, it’s quite cool and we hope that this original distribution will bear fruit. As a reminder, John Woo is the father of many great action classics like Flip/Face or Mission Impossible II: The Killer is notably the “Western” adaptation of “The Killer”, which he himself directed in 1989 and which was then a Hong Kong film.

  • Going to the cinema: October 23, 2024
  • Director : John Woo
  • With : Nathalie Emmanuel, Sam Worthington, Omar Sy

Venom : The Last Dance

Whatever we think of the first two Venom, they were a hit at the box office and Sony therefore quickly worked on the preparation of a third part, which should also conclude this arc dedicated to the famous Marvel character. This time, the symbiotes have found Earth and are heading straight towards the blue planet to screw up everything: it will then be up to Venom to save humanity (a first) by using his still destructive abilities. A mega blockbuster that will get people talking: it remains to be seen whether it will be… or not.

  • Going to the cinema: XXX octobre 2024
  • ”’Director”: Kelly Marcel
  • With : Tom Hardy, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Juno Temple
