“Le Festin des loups” in the running for the Cabri d’or

Olivier Maurin, the mayor and sheep breeder, published his work entitled The Feast of the Wolves.

In this autobiographical story developed over four years, he addresses the thorny subject of the presence of large predators in Lozère, such as the wolf, and their impact on the profession of breeder. At the head of a flock of 1,200 sheep, he talks about the difficulties encountered in particular during summer pastures and believes that the policies implemented in terms of environmental preservation are to the detriment of the future of rural areas.

By wanting to protect wolves too much, it is ultimately the survival of breeders that we threaten. “, he affirms. A testimony which nuances the idea of the possible cohabitation between wolves and traditional peasant activity, written against a backdrop of landscapes and a very Cévennes atmosphere.

The Feast of the Wolves was selected for the Cabri d’or 2024 prize. This literary prize and its Cévennes category, reward each year works of different natures highlighting the Cévennes territory. This will be awarded next November, in Alès. It is accompanied by a prize of €5,000.

Olivier Maurin also founded the National Federation for the Defense of Pastoralism in 2018.
