Diogo Costa: The Penalty-Saving Sensation Prepares for Manchester United Clash

Diogo Costa has carved out a niche for himself in the annals of football by showcasing his remarkable prowess in saving penalties.

The 25-year-old Portugal international made headlines this summer, becoming the first goalkeeper in history to save three consecutive penalties at a European Championship.

Prior to that, he had already made his mark in the Champions League with FC Porto, setting a record with a staggering 36.36% of penalties taken against him being missed. This makes him a formidable figure for a resurgent Manchester United as they gear up for their Europa League encounter this Thursday.

Reflecting on the challenge ahead, Costa remarked, “We know United are not in the best of form, but we also recognize what Manchester United represents. To me, they are the biggest club in England, a unique institution that I have admired since childhood. It’s akin to a Champions League clash; it’s going to be an exhilarating match. We must bring our A-game to secure the victory.”

His skillset has attracted considerable attention, and like many of Portugal’s brightest talents, he is frequently linked with a transfer to one of Europe’s elite leagues, particularly England’s Premier League. Before Andre Onana made his move to United from Inter, Costa was among the names speculated to don the red jersey at Old Trafford.

He shares a close bond with United’s full-back Diogo Dalot, whom he considers “like a brother” from their days at the Porto academy. Furthermore, he describes his fellow international teammate Bruno Fernandes as “one of the best” players globally, and firmly expresses, “he’s the one to watch out for” at Estadio do Dragao.

Yet, despite the swirling transfer rumors, why has Costa opted to remain at Porto?

He honestly stated, “What I always say holds true – if I never leave Porto, the club I cherish and where I honed my skills, I will be content. But we all understand how unpredictable a footballer’s career can be.” This was his first interview conducted in English.

Reports from Portugal suggest that Costa’s contract carries a hefty £62.5m release clause, a tempting figure considering his remarkable achievements with his boyhood club.
