For testing purposes, DREAL and the authorities authorized the restart of the Aix biomass boiler which had suffered an industrial accident in 2023. A 26-year-old man died following an explosion.
On September 29, 2023, a terrible accident took place on one of the two boilers in the Aix-en-Provence biomass boiler room. An explosion caused the death of a 26-year-old young man. Although the investigation is still underway, DREAL and the authorities have authorized the restart of the boiler for testing purposes.
“The boiler will be restarted tomorrow morning,” indicates the city of Aix-en-Provence, which specifies that “these start-up tests are necessary to carry out measurements and checks which will allow it to restart at full load in the days that follow. The second biomass boiler will restart around November 15, 2024.
“The aim of these tests is to be able to supply the district heating network in the best conditions,” adds the municipality. She recalls that “continuity of service to subscribers has been maintained since the shutdown of the biomass boiler”.
Inaugurated in January 2014 in Encagnane, the Aix-en-Provence wood boiler room currently provides heating and domestic hot water for 9,500 homes (including the hospital center, the Montperrin psychiatric hospital, the forum buildings cultural….). More than 28,000 people in Aix benefit from this energy source.
