The price of a pack of cigarettes will soon reach 13 euros

Constantly increasing for several years, the price of tobacco has not finished rising because other increases are planned for next year and even 2026.

In , more than 12 million daily smokers are recorded. 12 million French people who set aside a budget for their tobacco consumption despite successive increases in its price. After Ireland, France is the second country in Europe with the highest tobacco prices.

In the space of two decades, the cost of a packet of cigarettes has quadrupled, going from 3 euros in 2000 to nearly 12 euros in 2024. An increase explained by the desire for dissuasion on the part of the public health authorities in order to to reduce tobacco consumption.

In 2023, the price of a packet of cigarettes increased between 10 and 80 cents while the price of a sachet of rolling tobacco increased between 20 cents and 1.20 euros. In 2024, a first increase took place on January 1, between 50 cents to 1 euro depending on the brand. The second, in March, added between 50 and 75 to the price of tobacco. Thus, certain packs of cigarettes have exceeded the symbolic bar of 12 euros.

Increases planned for 2025 and 2026!

If that wasn’t enough, the next few years will be more of the same. A next increase is scheduled for the year 2025, from January 1, when the average price of a pack of cigarettes should exceed 12 euros. Some brands, like Marlboro, could even see their price reach 13 euros per pack.

A second increase is also scheduled for 2026. All brands combined, the average cost of a pack of cigarettes should reach 13 euros. For rolling tobacco, the sachet would even cost around 20 euros.

As a reminder, of the price of a pack of cigarettes, 80% is collected by the State in the form of taxes while the manufacturer’s margin represents around 15%. Finally, for the tobacconist, the margin oscillates between 8 and 10%. That’s a lot of math for a reduced life expectancy.
