“Klagenfurt water polo – is there an aftermath?”

Letters to the editor on “Water debacle makes international headlines”, September 30th

The first goal was scored by a magistrate official when he whistled back to the state disaster control agency despite the immediate obligation to inform the population if microbial drinking water parameters were not complied with (according to Section 5 Z 5 of the Drinking Water Ordinance). Peter Kaiser’s shot then missed the mayor of Klagenfurt, as the state governor (according to Section 24 LMSVG) himself represents the “responsible authority” for food safety. It remains unclear whether medical officer Ladurner’s well-intentioned pass was out of line, because the number of so-called colony-forming units only represents an indicative parameter value that allows little prediction of the real health risk. For the team captain of Klagenfurt Stadtwerke, Erwin Smole, the water polo game on the seventh day is not embarrassing, just “unpleasant”, even though his team now includes the armed forces and a media-friendly star doctor.

It remains exciting to see how high the ball can fly and whether there will be an aftermath.

Crisis management

One wonders how the quality, error and crisis management of the city government and the municipal utilities works. The primary aim should be to limit the damage to the population, such as disinfecting the pipes. You can research the causes in parallel, but first you react with all means possible to protect people. But they are left out in the rain in Klagenfurt without being informed. You could also communicate the concentration of germs, that would be a kind of oh-so-praised transparency. Once again, as with Corona and Chernobyl, we are dealing with a delay in information being sent to the population.

A mismanagement that is probably due to a city government that is overwhelmed in all areas and by internal quarrels. Event culture and photo ops seem to be the most important tasks of our city politicians. When will they take the consequences of all this misery and step down?
Eva Jedlicka, Klagenfurt

Packaging machine

There is a water packaging machine in Villach that is currently on hold but ready for use at any time. Why didn’t Klagenfurt take advantage of this support option immediately? I think it is the job of a city government to make use of all possible support options for citizens. Or has Christian Scheider once again used tactical considerations?
