American actor John Amos of “Good Times and Roots” dies at 84

American actor John Amos, famous for his roles in iconic series Good Times et Rootsas well as in the films A prince in New York et 58 minutes to livedied at the age of 84.

His death, which occurred on August 21, was attributed to natural causes, announced his agent. His son, Kelly Christopher Amos, also spoke out in a statement, saying: “It is with a heavy heart that I announce the passing of my father. He was a man of great kindness, loved throughout the world (…) He had a beautiful life, and his legacy will live on thanks to his memorable performances in cinema and television. »

He added: “My father loved his acting profession. He recently appeared in the series Suits LAplaying himself, as well as in the documentary tracing his career, America’s Dad. He was my father, my best friend and my hero. Thank you for your prayers and support. »

John Amos first came to prominence on American television in the 1970s. He started out on the hit sitcom The Mary Tyler Moore Show before experiencing a meteoric rise thanks to his role as father in Good Timesthe first sitcom centered on a black family. He also made an impression by playing Kunta Kinte in the mini-series Rootswhich became a phenomenon in the United States, attracting more than 130 million viewers in 1977. This role earned him an Emmy Award nomination.

John Amos has also made appearances in series like At the White House, My Uncle Charlie et The Ranch. In the cinema, he distinguished himself alongside Eddie Murphy in the comedy A prince in New York and in 58 minutes to livethe continuation of Die Hard. Most recently, he appeared in the film Uncut Gems opposite Adam Sandler.
