Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (shown in June 2024) declared his intention to retaliate following Iran’s attack on Israel.

INTERNATIONAL – A promise of reprisals which raises fears of a regional conflagration. “Iran made a serious mistake and will pay the price,” said Benjamin Netanyahu in a television speech on Tuesday, October 1, after Tehran launched around 200 missiles against Tel Aviv in the evening. “We will stick to what we have set: whoever attacks us, we attack,” added the Israeli Prime Minister.

For his part, American President Joe Biden indicated that discussions were “ in progress ” with Israel on the response to the attack on Iran, and reaffirmed its support for its ally by declaring that “the United States fully, fully, fully supports Israel”. Alongside him, National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said“There will be severe consequences for this attack and we will work with Israel to ensure that this is the case”.

While the Israeli authorities are still assessing the impact of the Iranian assault, which has so far caused two minor injuries in Israel, most of the missiles having been intercepted by the “Iron Dome” defense system, the implementation of a reprisal operation remains to be confirmed. Although it does not detail an operating procedure, the Hebrew State nevertheless insists on its determination to respond, Benjamin Netanyahu having convened a council of ministers responsible for security on Tuesday evening to discuss a military response to the attack.

• Several strategic infrastructures in Iran

During its attack, Iran targeted “the three main military air bases of the Zionist regime, the Mossad [les services secrets israéliens – ndlr]center of terror, the Nevatim air base for F-35 aircraft and the Hatzerim air base, which was used to assassinate the martyr Nasrallah”, said the Iranian chief of staff.

Similarly, Israel could target several strategic infrastructures in Iran, including the bases of the Revolutionary Guards. Iranian ports are also tactical targets, due to the commercial and military activities taking place there.

Separately, former Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett urged Israel to retaliate by destroying Iran’s nuclear program, in a message posted on his social media. Officially, Iran is developing its nuclear capabilities for civilian use, but they are suspected of serving military ambitions and being used by Tehran as a deterrent tool. The attack on Iranian nuclear facilities could be carried out by a classic military operation or a cyberattack like that of Hezbollah’s walkie-talkies, Malcolm Davis, defense strategy analyst, told CNN.

Oil installations and power plants could also be targeted, according to the American site Axiosciting information obtained from Israeli officials.

• LIran’s supreme leader transferred to a secure location

The Revolutionary Guards, which make up Iran’s ideological army, claimed to have “ aimed at the heart » of Israel to avenge the death of the leaders of Hezbollah (Hassan Nasrallah), Hamas (Ismaïl Haniyeh) and one of their commanders, Abbas Nilforoushan, killed with Hassan Nasrallah in Lebanon.

Since Israel’s attacks targeting Hezbollah leaders in Lebanon, Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has been transferred to a secure location inside the country with heightened security measures, amid concerns about ‘to be next on Israel’s target list.

Iran had promised a response to Israel following the death of Ismaïl Haniyeh on July 31. It was ultimately Israel’s offensive in Lebanon and the death of Hassan Nasrallah that triggered it. Likewise, Israel could leave a delay of several weeks before acting or decide to carry out a rapid operation in the coming days. Israel Defense Forces spokesman Daniel Hagari says Israel will retaliate “at the time and place of our choosing”.

Benjamin Netanyahu “has a long tradition of vigorous and rapid response” and the “restraint is not his strong point”however, comments political analyst Jordan Barkin for AFP.

• Iran in the sights, but also its allies

Lebanese Hezbollah and Palestinian Hamas are allied with Iran in a “ axis of resistance » to Israel. In this context, other territories, beyond Iran, remain under threat of an Israeli response. Particularly the Gaza Strip, where the IDF has already been carrying out intense bombings for almost a year, following the October 7 attack by Hamas on its territory.

Lebanon is also already targeted by Israeli army operations, with the aim of weakening Lebanese Hezbollah. This Wednesday morning, October 2, the IDF launched a new appeal urging civilians to evacuate “ immediately ” new locations in southern Lebanon, before announcing in a statement that it would send additional troops to participate in ground incursions in the region.

However, the Israeli response appears to be constrained by the conditions set by its American ally, who does not want to see the conflict spread to the Middle East. It is also by the threats of the Iranian chief of staff, General Mohammad Bagheri, who promised that Iran will strike “with greater intensity” and will aim “ all infrastructure » of the country if Israel initiates retaliation. “Our action is over unless the Israeli regime decides to invite further reprisals”he insisted.
