In 1940, she was no longer the model muse of the surrealist Man Ray. Living in London with the painter Roland Penrose, the American Lee Miller (1907-1977) dedicated herself body and soul to photography.
After covering the British war effort during the Blitz for the magazine Vogue, it documents the advance of the Allies on the European continent: the last battles of Saint-Malo, the liberation of Paris and the discovery of the Nazi death camps.
Lee Millerwhich actress Kate Winslet took eight years to produce and of which she plays the title role, escapes the pitfall of the indigestible biopic, by focusing on this decisive page in the thousand lives of the New Yorker.
Classically crafted, the film draws its strength from the personality of a woman who, having recovered from a childhood trauma, had the courage to confront the greatest tragedy in our History and to make it to know.
Some of his poignant photos, which punctuate fiction, are currently visible in the exhibition “Lee Miller, Saint-Malo under siege, August 1944”, in the Breton city.
