The reduction in VAT on these food products ended this Monday, September 30.

The measure was taken in June and approved by the Spanish government: extending the reduction in VAT to 0% on certain basic food products until September 30. And this is to cope with the increase in foodstuffs and not add too much weight to consumers’ baskets.

On Tuesday, October 1, prices automatically rose for several basic food products, from milk to flour, including eggs, pasta and oil. A 2% increase in VAT which will last until December 31 before… a new increase in January 2025, report several Spanish media.

Olive oil is the most affected product with an average price increase of 25 cents per liter. According to a consumer association (OCU), the end of 0% VAT will lead to an increase in spending of 36 euros per year for consumers.

Here is the list of food products affected by the end of 0% VAT: bread, milk, eggs, flour, cheese, legumes, fruits and vegetables, cereals, olive oil, potatoes, seed oils and pastes.
