Patrice Motsepe decides to take 0 dollars!

Algeria – The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is considering an increase in annual compensation in the run-up to its 46th Ordinary General Assembly which will be held in Ethiopia. According to the proposals, the new amounts would be as follows:

  • 20 000 USD for CAF vice-presidents
  • 20 000 USD for members of the CAF Executive Committee
  • 25 000 USD for presidents of CAF zonal unions
  • 20 000 USD for the two special advisors to the president of CAF
  • 50 000 USD for the presidents of CAF member associations
  • 50 000 USD for the president of the Association of African Clubs (ACA)

These proposed increases have sparked various reactions within the African football community. On the one hand, some believe that these increases are justified given the increased responsibilities and time devoted by managers to the development of football on the continent. On the other hand, voices are being raised to criticize these amounts, believing that they could be better invested in infrastructure, the training of young talents or support for local clubs in financial difficulty.

A notable fact in this proposal is that Dr Patrice Motsepe, president of CAF, chose not to receive any compensation. This selfless gesture was widely praised and seen as an example of selfless leadership. By foregoing any remuneration, Dr Motsepe demonstrates his deep commitment to African football and his desire to see the organization’s resources used for the benefit of the development of the sport.

The president’s decision could prompt other CAF members to reconsider their own allowances and consider the best ways to support football on the continent. As the general assembly approaches, it will be interesting to see how these proposals will be debated and what final decisions will be made.
