The British company Predator Oil & Gas announced the potential discovery of helium gas in the exploration area of Guercif province, where it holds one of the 4 exploration licenses granted by the Kingdom to international companies in the sector .
The permit covers an area of 7,269 square kilometers, in the province of Guercif, 180 kilometers northwest of the Tenderara field, where quantities of gas were discovered by Sound Energy.
This announcement comes at a time when the global helium market is booming, with demand surging across the technology and industrial sectors.
Helium is a very rare gas and, thanks to its unique properties – inert, light, non-toxic and excellent thermal conductor – it has become essential in many cutting-edge sectors.
This discovery would help strengthen the Moroccan economy and increase the Kingdom’s competitiveness in the field of energy and natural resources.
This discovery comes at a time when Morocco is working to diversify its energy sources and reduce its dependence on fossil fuel imports.
The strategic location of Guercif, close to the Maghreb-Europe gas pipeline, offers direct access to European markets, which could facilitate the export of helium to European Union countries.
Predator Wall & Gas has not yet released a definitive assessment of the exact potential of the helium deposit. However, the company noted that future analyzes will determine whether commercial exploitation is possible.
This precaution clearly illustrates the challenges of such a project: exploitation must be justified not only economically, but also in terms of sustainability and global demand.
With sales prices ranging from $14 per cubic meter in the United States to $30 in Europe, helium remains an expensive resource. This situation could, however, favor Morocco, which could benefit from competitive prices to conquer new market shares.
In addition to helium, previous results from Predator Wall & Gas indicate the presence of natural gas resources estimated at approximately 1.5 billion cubic meters. This double discovery could promote the emergence of an energy center in the region, meeting the needs of the local and international market.
It is used in semiconductor manufacturing, cools superconducting magnets in MRI machines, and plays a crucial role in scientific research. Its ability to withstand extremely low temperatures also makes it valuable for cryogenic applications.
