Cycling World Championships 2024: Live blog elite men’s road race – Strong leading group of six ahead, Alaphilippe abandonment

The Cycling World Championships conclude today with the road race for elite men. Tadej Pogacar is the absolute top favorite, but there are more privateers on the coast. The elite men start their competition in Winterthur. From there it is about seventy kilometers – including the climb to Book at the Earth (4.8 km to 4.2%), Kyburg (1.2 km at 12%) in Suessblatz (1,7 km aan 8,5%) – to the local circuit in Zurich. This lap is almost completed once before the line is crossed for the first time. The circuit is then done seven more times.

The local circuit in and around Zurich is 26.8 kilometers long. The beginning of the round is the most difficult, with two slopes that follow each other in quick succession. First there’s the Zürichbergstrasse (1.1 km at 8%)then the Witikonerstrasse (2.3 km at 5.7%). This is followed by a rolling plateau of about ten kilometers, a descent and a not too difficult climb of 1.5 kilometers – with a gradient of 5%. Then it is another five kilometers to the finish.
