6 p.m. news – Death of Hassan Nasrallah: “The future is uncertain”, says a resident of Beirut

A huge victory for the Israeli government? The death of Hassan Nasrallah, leader of Hezbollah for 32 years, was confirmed by the movement this Saturday, September 28. The man who was seen as the most powerful man in Lebanon was “eliminated” by the Israeli army during a devastating raid in the southern suburbs of Beirut.

The death of the Hezbollah leader is symbolic. In Israel, it is seen as a huge victory over terrorism. Hassan Nasrallah was responsible for several attacks against Israelis. The leader of the movement has been calling for the destruction of Israel for several years.

This elimination of the leader of Hezbollah is perhaps a turning point. It should further weaken the movement. But, according to a leading Israeli media outlet, Hassan Nasrallah’s cousin should take over as head of the militia.

Hassan Nasrallah is not the only one to have been killed. Israel assures that the almost all of the leaders of the movement were eliminated in recent months. These targeted eliminations began this summer with the assassination of Hezbollah number two, Fouad Chokr, at the end of July. They have continued in recent weeks during targeted strikes in Beirut.

Reinforced security in Israel?

At midday, the army spokesperson also stressed that there was “still a long way to go“. Hezbollah, which still has tens of thousands of missiles, still poses a threat to Israel. IDF strikes continued this Saturday in Lebanon, as far as Beirut.

Tension has clearly risen a notch in Israel. Residents fear an aggressive response from Hezbollah but also from Iran. In the north of the country, rockets have been raining almost continuously since Friday evening. These attacks were claimed by Hezbollah. In Tel Aviv and throughout the center of the country, sirens have recently sounded. A missile, fired from Yemen, was intercepted. And with a view to a much more violent response, of which Hezbollah and the Iranian militias are capable, security instructions have been reinforced, even in the center of the country.

Thousands of Beirut residents on the streets

A young man, living in the Dahieh district, spoke to RTL. “People feel the misfortune, the pain […] the future is uncertain”he explains. Hassan Nasrallah was a “demigod” for some peoplecontinues this resident of the southern suburbs of Beirut. “I wish for peace,” assures the young man.

The area is a field of ruins. He is still under bombs. In the evening, a strike again hit the southern district of Beirut. This suburb is under a deluge of fire. The southern part of the capital is regularly enveloped in a thick cloud of smoke. A section of the neighborhood was simply pulverized, entire streets transformed into mountains of rubble. The toll is still undetermined but it risks being very heavy.

These bombings put thousands of people on the streets. After this massive strike, which occurred on Friday, the Israeli army informed the population that it would carry out other bombings in the same area. In the aftermath, thousands of Lebanese were forced to flee and slept anywhere in Beirut except the area targeted by Israel. These families are not sure they will ever be able to return home.
