King Charles, Daniel Radcliffe, Ariana Grande, Emma Watson… tributes are pouring in to honor the memory of Maggie Smith

British actress Maggie Smith, icon of theater, cinema and series, died this Friday, September 27, at the age of 89. A year exactly after his on-screen partner, Michael Gambon, who played Dumbledore from the third film Harry Potter. An immense emotion immediately gripped her fans, and more broadly those who have been able to know and admire her for decades.

First on social networks, thousands of messages of affection mixed with sadness bore witness to the indelible mark left by this multi-awarded actress. Then, it was his loved ones, his on-screen partners and other celebrities who spoke in turn.

Daniel Radcliffe, who shared the screen with her for 10 years on the saga Harry Potterobviously paid tribute to him in a press release:

“I will always consider myself incredibly lucky to have been able to work with her, and to have spent time with her on set. The word ‘legend’ is overused but if it has to be applied to anyone in this industry, it’s her. Thanks, Maggie.”

In turn, Emma Watson, who played Hermione in the saga Harry Pottershared his feelings in an Instagram story:

“When I was younger, I had no awareness of the legend that Maggie was — the woman I had the immense privilege to know. It wasn’t until I became an adult that I finally realized that I had shared scenes with the very definition of genius. She was real, honest, funny and proud. Maggie, there were a lot of male professors, and my god, you fooled them. Thank you for all your kindness. I’m going to miss you.”

Rupert Grint, the interpreter of Ron, also left this touching message on his Instagram account:

“I am heartbroken to hear about Maggie. She was so special, always hilarious and kind. I feel incredibly lucky to have shared these moments with her on set, and even more lucky to have been able to dance with her. I’m going to miss you Maggie. I send your love to his family.”

King Charles III of England, for his part, issued a press release to bid farewell to a “national treasure” :

“My wife and I were extremely sad to learn of the death of Dame Maggie Smith. As the curtain closes on this national treasure, we join those around the world who remember with the greatest admiration and affection his many brilliant performances, his warmth and keen wit, which shone on stage as in life.”

Singer and actress Ariana Grande also shared a few photos of Maggie Smith in her Instagram stories, including one from the campaign for the luxury brand Loewe of which she was the muse in 2023. An image that the star of Wicked accompanied by a few hearts.

In a statement to the Associated Press, actor Hugh Bonneville, who shared the screen with Maggie Smith for many years on the series and films Downton Abbeyalso mentioned “his sharp mind” and paid tribute to his immense talent:

“Anyone who has shared a stage with Maggie Smith can attest to her piercing gaze, quick wit and formidable talent. She was a true legend of her generation and will live on through her many magnificent on-screen performances. My condolences to his sons and loved ones.”
