It is a terrible tragedy which has struck the world of cycling. Muriel Furrer, a young Swiss runner aged only 18, died this Friday, September 27 following her serious fall the day before during the junior road race at the World Championships. The UCI announced the terrible news in a press release: “It is with great sadness that the International Cycling Union and the Organizing Committee of the World Championships today learned the tragic news of the death of young Swiss cyclist Muriel Furrer.“
In the rest of its press release, the authority said more about the circumstances of the tragedy: “With the death of Muriel Furrer, the international cycling community loses a rider who had a future ahead of her. The 18-year-old runner fell heavily yesterday, Thursday September 26, during the road race in the Women’s Junior category, and suffered serious head trauma before being transported to hospital by helicopter in a very critical condition. Muriel Furrer sadly died today at the University Hospital of Zurich. The UCI and the Organizing Committee of the 2024 UCI Road and Para-cycling Road World Championships would like to extend their sincere condolences to the family of Muriel Furrer, her friends and her Swiss Cycling Federation. The family of Muriel Furrer asks all stakeholders to respect their privacy during these very painful times.“
