A sketch at the Mas Saint-Jean chapel

Saint-Sulpice-le-Dunois. A sketch in the chapel of Mas Saint-Jean. Around fifty people came to Mas Saint-Jean, formerly called Mas-Chabot, on Sunday, during the European Heritage Days.

Serge Petit, passionate about local history, and Marie-Claude Guignat, municipal councilor in Saint-Sulpice-le-Dunois who maintains the chapel, had organized two visits to this building which dates from the 12th century. e century.

Did Joan of Arc come around 1430?

New this year was the presentation of a unique sketch with four amateur actors and volunteers. They brought back to life this legendary moment which has raised questions since the Middle Ages: did Joan of Arc come around 1430 to the modest chapel of Saint Jean-Baptiste to pray there?

In this representation, Joan of Arc enters the chapel, she collects herself and prays. Joined by the prior, she tells him that she is staying at the Château de la Bastide, with Jean de Brosse who is her comrade-in-arms, and Jeanne de Naillac, daughter of the Viscount of Bridiers. The prior recognizes her immediately, he knows her exploits. Jean de Brosse and Jeanne de Naillac arrive, worried not to see her return. Juliette played Joan of Arc, the prior of Mas-Chabot was played by Denis, Eric was Jean de Brosse and Christelle was in the role of Jeanne de Naillac.

Then, Serge Petit presented a description of the building with its dry stone walls and its sloping flat tiled roof, next to which stands a “remarkable lime tree”, labeled in 1994.

While the furnishings are poor, a bell from 1813 is in perfect condition. There is also a statue of Saint John the Baptist and a stained glass window representing Joan of Arc, made on antique glass in 2005 by Antoine Duchambon and offered to the town by Gaston Delacour.

In the past, peasants came to the chapel to make offerings for the protection of their sheep. Or pray for rain, today not necessary, noted Serge. Every year, on June 24, at 6 p.m., a pilgrimage mass takes place in honor of Saint John the Baptist.
