Inflation hits lowest level since July 2021

In September, inflation reached its lowest level in more than three years, at 1.2% over one year, according to INSEE. This is a marked improvement compared to previous months, when prices continued to rise.

The biggest drop since 1990?

Having already fallen below the 2% mark in August, inflation continued its downward trend. The decline recorded this month brings inflation to its lowest rate since July 2021.

On a monthly basis, the decrease in prices was notable, with a drop of 1.2%, the largest observed since 1990. In August, prices had, on the contrary, increased by 0.5%. This phenomenon is mainly due to a fall in energy prices, particularly petroleum products. According to official data, fuel prices have fallen significantly: diesel lost fourteen cents per liter between June and September, while SP95-E10 fell by almost 13.7 cents, thus providing a respite to motorists forced to use their vehicles.

Furthermore, certain sectors such as health have also seen their prices decrease. Likewise, the increases recorded during the Olympic Games have attenuated, although INSEE has not specified the prices concerned.

Food products: inflation remains high

However, not all prices follow this downward trend. THE ” food and tobacco prices » recorded an increase of 0.5% in September. Manufactured products, notably clothing and shoes, have also seen their prices increase.

Statisticians’ projections show that inflation is expected to remain below 2% until the end of the year, with a forecast of 1.6% in December 2024. The Banque de , for its part, anticipates inflation at 2.5% at the end of the year, with a gradual decline to 1.9% in 2026, partly thanks to falling electricity prices.
