Claire Chazal criticizes the extension of the 8 p.m. news on 2

After having marked the history of television news on TF1 for nearly 25 years, Claire Chazal continues to evolve in the world of media, notably with cultural programs such as Passage des arts or Le Grand échquier on Télévisions. Recently invited to TV Magazine’s Buzz TV set, the 67-year-old journalist spoke about the extension of France 2’s 8 p.m. news to a full hour. Launched on September 9, 2024, this new formula aims to “attract new audiences”, in a context of strong competition with TF1.

However, Claire Chazal is skeptical about this extended format. “I would never have done it,” she declared frankly, referring to her own experience at the head of 35 to 40 minute news on TF1. According to her, systematically extending the news to one hour could pose content problems: “We can’t make a news with filler or filler topics, that’s obvious straight away”. Chazal also highlights the difficulties of maintaining the attention of viewers for an hour every evening, except in the case of exceptional events which justify such a duration.

At the same time, the journalist also commented on other current issues, such as the departure of Marc-Olivier Fogiel from the management of BFMTV and the decision of Arcom not to renew the TNT frequency of C8. While expressing surprise at this decision, she acknowledged that the channel had perhaps not respected all the obligations associated with the free granting of its frequency.

If some hope for a return of Claire Chazal at the helm of the news, particularly after the departure of Julien Arnaud for Télématin, she rejects this idea: “I was the incumbent for years, and I am not going to become a replacement”. She affirms that the current presenters of TF1, including Anne-Claire Coudray, do their job very well, and that she prefers to devote herself to her cultural broadcasts, an area in which she feels perfectly comfortable.
